Forum: GratefulDead Subject: How much GD is on your hard-drive?

First, I am very grateful for Archive and all they are, not simply music. And not simply Grateful Dead. I think they are a music downloaders dream. More than I could ask for, for all my music needs... and more than I could ask for for my listening needs. Again, I am Grateful.

My downloading of Grateful Dead shows has passed a milestone... and I am speaking Grateful Dead only. There are others on the hard-drive, but I speak of Grateful Dead ONLY at this time.

I had been able to graciously download many SBDs before they were pulled from direct-downloadability. Taboo that some know how to DL the SBD's, but I do not know how, and I do not care to know how. I have many from gdlive.com, nugs.net, and other sharing sites.

I am OK with the AUD... We were ALL part of the audience. We should be OK with the AUD for our downloading needs. I am also OK with MP3s. Most of mine are 128kbps MP3.

OK.. OK... My question is simple... I am curious.

How many Grateful Dead shows are currently on your hard-drive?

Grateful Dead ONLY, as this is a Grateful Dead forum. It can be an internal or an external hard-drive. For privacy-sake, the exact # need not be divulged. It also can be from Archive, Etree, Nugs, GDLive, etc.

Soooo...

A. <100
B. 101-199
C. 200-499
D. 500-1000
E. 1000+

My answer.... Just passed into D (On an external hard-drive).

I have no given right to these... (Past postings have referred to "rights"...) So I am thereful "Grateful."

Having focused on 68, and into 69 and 70, I have roughly 150 shows. Relatively 'selective' quality wise, but have most all of 68, and much of 69-70, but only a few from other years (65, 66, 67, 71, 72-87 only five or so).

All on CDs, backed up on DVD as SHNs, and on one ext HD (200 g).

What dedication to the forum...sending this from a 'rain day' break in Ireland (this is the rainiest July on record).

I keep it all on ex HD's. I just filled my 300Gig drive with SBD's. My 200Gig drive is about 3/4 full of AUD's. Misc. Garcia and others make up about 25Gigs on the computer. My next step is a 500Gig drive. Where will it all end?!?!?

My answer: Not enough

My wife's answer: Too damn much, why the hell do you need
83 versions of the same song? What is wrong with you people?

Our wives are in agreement (although I don't have that much on the hard drive). However, I've ambushed her by getting my 6-year old to ask for "Jerry music".

My fiance (what a weird term at age 55) noticed my shelves of gd cds. When I told her they were all gd concerts from 1966-1972, she reconsidered the marriage. So, I told her they were really porn DVDS. That seemed to do the trick.

The authorities confiscated my hard drive after one too many downloads. Apparently, the other inmates here at the asylum are Jefferson Airplane fans.

At one point me and my girlfriend owned about 500 cassette tapes. Then we had about as many cd's. Now, its just me and mp3 and we seem to hover in that same area 500 or so. Anymore and I start to become buried, forget everything and listen to nothing but LiveDead repeatedly. I also tend to stay far away from Aud tapes as sonically they often are thin in the vocals and lack bass. Phil is just so hard to record in a live hall...

ZERO keep everything on dvd disc's.i've lost over a 100 shows from hard drive failure and only two shows from dvd failure.with that said i have roughly 400 gigs on dvds not including garcia solo stuff.all my shows have come frome mail trade,shn/flac,trader's den and jerome's place and a few from gd.live.funny i may have one show from the archive, haven't gotten around to downloading aud shows from here since the MOTB crew are re transfering all these aud better from actual cassette masters of the original tapers and with better equipment.amazing job those guys have done.all my shows are in shn or flac format for preservation and the best possible audio quality.i'm very thankful for my meager collection after my hard drive failure.

A couple months ago, I had filled up my 250gb drive with lossless and so decided to archive on DL DVD and convert to mp3. I opened up around 120gb and have since filled it back up to about 200gb, all mp3. I'd like to say that I've backed it all up on DVD, but I really don't have the time or money. Seems to me, though, soon having my own copy of a show will become moot, as the shows are available to stream. But, you know the drill, we 'heads can be a little compulsive about our hobby. I still download at least one show a day from the various sites. I've never counted before, but a quick count looks like around 400 shows GD alone. Then, I've got about 50 JGB, 100 P&F and about 25 Ratdog shows. On a separate drive, I have about 90gb of other music. I put my entire CD collection on to my computer and I don't even have another stereo, besides the radio/CD player in my kitchen. I have a couple mp3 players and a 2.1 computer speaker set up for outside and it seems to do me fine.
